AIGA China Design Bridge

Intention
The AIGA program, China Design Bridge facilitates dedicated relationships between Chinese design institutions and U.S. design entities. Each “Bridge” will represent a long-term commitment on both sides which will foster mutual understanding by exposure to different cultures, sharing resources, expanding opportunities for faculty, providing access to international exchange often reserved for large, coastal or well-funded institutions.
Participants
The Design Bridge program is intended for design-related entities in China and abroad. In China, these will mainly be institutions that teach design and have an interest in cross-cultural communication. Chinese institutions must have dedicated staff members able to communicate in English.
AIGA China’s involvement
Our primary role will be to connect design institutions between the U.S. and China. We will provide guidelines for the relationships, keep design communities on both sides aware of relevant developments, facilitate the channels of information and resource exchange, and mediate problems when required. We will share specific success stories and relay challenges in order to strengthen all the bridge relationships. We will distribute useful curricula, as available, to Design Bridge participants.
Program
Chinese and U.S. institutions will be matched by evaluating each school’s range of departments, general curriculum, student body, campus location, etc. Once the Bridge counterparts agree to take part in the program, they will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that demonstrates their commitment and outlines each side’s responsibilities.
The first exchange is likely to be a visit by a representative from the U.S. side to the Chinese institution. Subsequent exchanges will be determined by the Bridge partners, and might include faculty as well as students from both sides. Collaborative “virtual” exchanges, with no physical travel, will also be encouraged.
Outcomes
A content-rich database of Chinese and American design institutions and educators is currently being developed. The first Bridges will be initiated by the end of 2009, with more expected the following year.
