AIGA China Design Bridge

Intention

AIGA China Design Bridge will facilitate dedicated relationships between Chinese design institutions and U.S. design entities. Each “Bridge” will represent a long-term commitment on both sides which will foster mutual understanding by exposure to different cultures, sharing resources, expanding opportunities for faculty and faculty, providing access to international exchange often reserved for large, coastal or well-funded institutions, and leveling of the playing field between Chinese and the U.S.

Participants

Chinese institutions teaching design which have an interest in cross-cultural communication and exploring design. [Chinese institutions must have dedicated staff members able to communicate in English.] American design schools or professionals with interest in cross-cultural communication and exploring design and in China.

AIGA China’s involvement

Connect designers, students and institutions between U.S. and China. Facilitate the channels of information and resource exchange. Direct useful American curricula to China’s design schools.

Network

Create a network of design institutions in China and the U.S. Match them upon request or initiate pairing. Use our existing AIGA China Advisory Board (representing 12 regions across China) as a starting point and primary source for networking with Chinese educators and schools. Continue the initiative through our AIGA China National Committee (approximately 180 individuals from throughout China).

Program

Chinese and U.S. institutions will be matched by evaluating each school’s range of departments, general curriculum, student body, campus location, etc. Once the Bridge counterparts agree to take part in the program, they will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which demonstrates their commitment and outlines each side’s responsibilities.

The first exchange is likely to be a visit by a representative from the U.S. side to the Chinese institution. Subsequent exchanges will be determined by the Bridge partners, and might include faculty as well as students from both sides. Collaborative “virtual” exchanges, with no physical travel, will also be encouraged.

Outcomes

A content-rich database of Chinese and American design institutions and educators is currently being developed. The first Bridges will be initiated by the end of 2009, with more expected the following year.
